Fuji SL 1 Comp vs Trek 5200 OCLV

Hey Guys,

Just wanted your opinion on a bike listed on craigslist. Is it a good value? Should I forgo a carbon frame for my first bike and save money?

http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/nva/bik/3063818834.html

I've been visiting local bike shops and searching the internet for my first road bike. I figured spending a little more now will keep me from wanting to upgrade anytime soon. I am not looking to race competitively but would like to push myself past just recreational riding and I figured a frame like this would suit my needs. What are your thoughts on this particular bike? Do any of you own one? I would appreciate any feedback you may have.

Thank you for your input!

Found another bike at a similar price range to the Fuji SL 1 Comp. It is a 2002 Trek 5200 OCLV. Much older than the Fuji, but equipped w/ Dura Ace.

Which one would you guys buy?!!?!?

Thanks for your reply paule11. I searched online for the same bike and came across the same link you posted. I am the same height as the seller so this bike should be my size. Plus, I am trying to talk him down to $1100 for the bike and accessories.

When should I expect current models to be discounted either online or at local bike shops?

Sounds alright I dont think that bike would fit someone 6 foot .
Fuji geometry is goofy. All manufacturers vary, but Fuji is quite a bit different than the norm. According to the geometry listed on the site, 50cm is a medium. Whereas most mfg's a medium is around a 52-54cm.
My gf rides a Fuji. She fit on 50cm from other mfg's so she got a 50cm Fuji. It was too big so she had to exchange it for a 47cm. She's 5'7"

I think $1,200 is a good value. $1,000 would be a great deal. But it comes with spare tire, tool kit, and extra tubes and co2 so there's some value there.
It's a great bike to start with that should give you plenty of use without needing to upgrade.

The only thing I wonder about though is the seller says he bought it NEW in March. A new 2010 bike in March of 2012? That's kinda odd. Who has new leftovers for that long? I'd question him on this. Where did he buy it? Does he have receipts?

@tlg

I too was a bit thrown off by this. The title of his listing states that it is a 2011 but I believe this bike a 2010. I asked him for receipts and information regarding his original purchase. He has yet to get back to me but I will see what he says. Thank you guys again for your input, I really do appreciate all the help I can get.

I'd go with the Fuji. If both bikes had the same miles on them, I'd "consider" the Trek. But it's 10yrs old (earlier days of carbon fiber) so who knows what kind of wear and tear is on it? And $1100 is way too much for a bike that was $2,699.99 msrp 10yrs ago. BikePedia - 2002 Trek 5200 Complete Bicycle
It's also NOT Dura Ace equipped. It's Ultegra equipped. It only has a Dura Ace RD. There is not much difference between 105 and Ultegra. Especially new 105 vs old Ultegra.
The seller says "Almost every part has been upgraded". Why? Did he just have upgradeitis? Or did he wear out lots of parts from heavy use?

It's a 2010. The 2011 SL1 was black and white.

Isn't bike shopping fun!? :mad2:
Keep up doing your research. Unfortunately now isn't the best time to shop. Late fall and winter are better. Everyone is out riding their bikes now.
