People say that if your derailler hanger is creaking, clean it and put some grease between it and the DS rear dropout. It sure worked for me. Instant cure for a bad creak, and so far my bike rides fine.

But I wonder. I found hanger installation instructions from Salsa and Wheels Mfg. Both recommend a dab of grease the installation screw(s), but neither mentions greasing the hanger/dropout interface. Has anyone had trouble from putting grease in this spot?

Don't overthink, it's just grease. It will not cause any problems at all. I grease the crap out of every hanger I install.

When I got my first really good bike back in the early 70's, it came with grease on every surface where metal contacted metal or metal contacted paint. I've used that philosophy ever since and have had nothing but quiet bikes. Grease is the answer, not the question.

Well, I did it today, a washer showed up on the floor, took me quite a while to figure out where it went (on the inside of the left crank).
One good thing about using bacon grease is that you get grease all over your fingers and what, it's a lot more enjoyable working on your bike and licking bacon grease off your fingers while you work instead of getting it all over the tools, parts, & workbench.

Would make the bike smell nice for sure. Unfortunately, it will also attract every dog in the neighborhood.
