Have an exposed gear cable rattle issue, in the open shell on the frame, which has a grommet/endcap one end, open on the other.

I was wondering, if from new, the bike had some anti-vibration cable set-up, or is there an after-market product for this?

I’ve looked at the tube liner, normally used on a frame sealed by a grommet/cable both ends, and the anti-vibration foam for cable sleeves. The liner will be susceptible to water/dirt getting in from the open ended shell, and the foam sheathing is meant for a cable sleeve and wears through in time if used on a bare cable.
I will probably use the foam option as it will have less cable friction issues, however, would appreciate any help you may give.

I'm not 100% sure what you're referring to for cable routing here... something like this...?

If that is the case, just google "bike cable donuts". You'll need to pull the cable to install, but they work and they're cheap.

Hi Thanks for that, I forgot to mention that they were internally routed. As you have shown those donuts look the ticket for externally mounted cables.

I watched a youtube video not long ago where the guy recommended using door frame insulation 'tubing' from your local hardware store for inside the frame anti-rattle. That might be worth investigating. I wish I could remember the channel or guys name, but I think it comes in a roll (2 'tubes' side by side that you separate) quite cheap too.
Thanks. Lining the open shell end where the rattle is may work. cheers.

So - running a cable ferrule/liner system would somehow attract more water and dirt? As opposed to what it is in the picture, IE inner cables only?

Schedule a tune up, ask for Jagwire full length cable liners to be installed F & R

the issue is the dirt that would enter a non-ferrule end liner, (do not tend to have ferrules for liners) then cause friction between the cable and bare cable.

Jagwire full length liners would still rattle. The liners are plastic and will make noise against the metal frame. It may be a little quieter but it won't eliminate it.

"bike cable donuts" mentioned above would work. But it might be hard keeping them spaced inside the frame. (Yes those are internally routed cables). The donuts might vibrate down the cables over time.

Get some foam tape. Place it every few inches on the cable. It'll stay in place and keep the cable from slapping against the frame.

Thanks. unfortunately you would not be able to slide this through the grommet at the top of the frame down the shell to the BB!

What grommet? Don't you have a cable stop at the top of the frame?

There is a grommet at the top of the frame, inserted in the frame opening, this grommet receives the cable stop from the outside of the frame. Therefore the frame opening to thread the cable through is not wide enough.
