Pearl Izumi Road Shoes

I read the recent article reviewing the new Pearl Izumi Viper in VeloNews. They were iffy on the soft material the upper was made out of, but commented on the generous toe box and comfort. I see Specialized is starting to offer shoes with the same Boa closer system too. Anyone have any experience with these shoes and Pearl Izumi shoes in general.
I need a wide toe box shoe and havent been to thrilled with the quality of Lake shoes? Any suggestions on other brands that offer a wide toe box?

I've never tried PI shoes, but I have wide feet too. I have short wide feet that I swear sometimes my feet are as wide as they are long. Shoes that fit me very well are Diadora and Northwave shoes, but you have to get the 1/2 sizes. I have never been able to find out if this is truth or myth, but I have been told by a Northwave rep that the half size shoes are just wider than the whole sizes, but just as long. So a 43.5 is only wider than the 43. Again, I don't know if that is really correct, but I happen to buy half sizes anyways.

I have a pair of PI Vagabonds (the black and yellow ones). Comfort is fine for my narrow feet, but the leather seems to be rather thin and fragile, especially at the front of the toe where it gets abraded by wheel overlap or anything else.

I ride in 5 different shoes

I do own a set of Pearl Izumi Vapors and like the fit. Some of the other shoes I ride in, and have a simular fit, are Shimano 150's, Shimano tr-01, Carnac Ellipse, Carnac TSK 1.

The sizes I use:

Pearl Izumi = 44
Carnac = 44.5
Shimano and Sidi = 45.5
Time = 45

had a pair bought last year at a PI outlet. they were fairly comfy but didn't work out on the bike. hard to explain, probably just the voices in my head. :rolleyes: i sold them on ebay for $25 more than i paid originally. ;)

nike are narrow, northwave are just right for my toes but the have a strange cut in the sole, shimano didn't work for me (shape), specialized was good but didn't hold up very long.

finally i settled on sidi, and what a difference! the genius 4s are the way to go (ime). check totalcycling.com for a good deal on shoes. big $ shipping and time in transit, but worth it imho.

good luck.

I have a pair of previous year Vapers which is their MTB version. OK shoe...plenty stiff with the carbon sole, but fit isn't as good as with my Sidis. I got em on clearance at Excel or I would have likely gone the Sidi route.

Ive read reviews saying they werent all that much wider than the regular Sidi's. Arent the Sidi's exceptionally narrow?
I have this weird toenail (sorry TMI) thing and need a wide toe box I use the Sidi Mega Genius and I even have narrow feet. I wear Smartwool running socks, kinda thick and cushy, and they fit my narrow foot if they are cinched down. (I leave the toe box strap open wider on that foot.)
