I have a shimano 600 crank and bb set in good shape on my old bike. Its a square taper BB. I do not have the tools to remove the crank arms or the BB yet. I really like my equipment, but it might not be the most economical choice since I will have to buy the tools and bb30 adapter. I might even be looking at even money or at least pretty close. Any opinions? Is there special tools need for a bb30 install that I havnt included? Is the bb30 system worth buying into? Are there square taper tools that I dont have listed? help fill in the missing info. this is my first build.

square taper Tool cost
-----------------------
crank puller 10.00
square bb puller 30.00
bb30 to square taper insert 20
shipping 10-15 ?

crap, if I upgrade to BB30 my 8 speed stuff will not work. right?
It will work fine with 8 speed. The difference is insignficant.

The BB30 adapter is easy to install, harder or, if carbon, impossible to remove. So factor that into your calculations.

I see nothing wrong with using your old gear. It just becomes a question as to how long your old parts are going to satisfy you on the new frame, or if you should just bight the bullet now and for new stuff, and leave your old bike assembled.

It's never bad to own tools, BTW. But, some tools are less broadly useful than they used to be, like crank pullers.
