I have had ATACs on my mountain bike for many years. They'll probably be OK on a road bike, though a little clunky. If I were buying new pedals for my mountain bike, I'd get Eggbeaters instead. They have a similar feel and mechanism to the ATACs, but with much lighter weight at the same price range.

I had Time ATAC Cyclo (one sided version of the MTB ATAC pedals) pedals on my roadie until yesterday when I decided to swap them for the Speedplay Zeros and buy road shoes. The ATACs were OK but I prefer to have a bigger platform and more contact between the cleats and the shoes. The Speedplay also have a lower stack height, better cornering clearance and are lighter than the Times. I got these initially in order to have only one pair of shoes and save money...

I'm keeping a pair Time ATAC Carbon on my MTB since they are great for this and shed mud very well...

I've tried various MTB pedal systems on my road bikes, and the only one I can recommend is the Shimano. Both the ATAC and the Eggbeater have way too small a platform for comfortable road riding, IMO. The SPD, by contrast, actually has some meat beneath your feet. It ain't quite as comfortable and secure as a bona fide road pedal, but it's perfectly okay. It's all very ironic because I HATE having SPD's on my mountain bike. Get a speck of dust in them and it's Jam City. For MTB, I like my Eggies.

I agree, particularly the lateral float

Have used ATAC's off road for 10 years, since they first came out, and did put them on a road bike for about 3 months. The floaty feeling that makes them good mtb pedals, to me, makes them lousy road pedals. Plus, as someone else mentioned, the stack height is a bit high for my liking.
I really like my ATACS on the MTB but would think the lateral float would not feel good on my road bike. Angular float is great but the sideways float would be too squirelly for me on the road. I use Time Impacts on the road bike and they are the best I've ever used. My comparisons are Shimano SPD and clones, Look and Keywin. Impacts combine all of the good points and none of the bad that these other pedals have to offer.

I used to use them on my road bike but after about 2 hours I would get hot spots. The pluses were you could use a mtb shoe and be able to walk without problems never used them on a road shoe. I always felt locked in never once had an accidental unclip. The only downside was the hot spots on my right foot. I now use the Time Impacts on my road bike. I love them.
