This small plastic part keeps popping off my front derailleur. How necessary is this piece? It does hold the cable in place, but perhaps I could just trim the excess cable?

It's not necessary for the function of the derailleur. If you cut the cable to proper length so you that can actually hold on to it if you need to adjust it for any reason it will hit the crank arm when you're on the small chain ring because it's not being held in the proper position.
The cable end cover should keep the cap from being lost, won't keep it on though. I don't think locktite works on plastic. It should snap on firmly, maybe your cap is missing a clamping tab.
The long part that goes into the nut snapped off. Had just put the bike in the trainer and my 18 month old pulled it off the cover link and snapped that part. Ordered a few from ebay (taiwan seller) in case he decides to do it again. Thanks all.
